9 Ways to Control How Your Shopify Links Look When Shared
Every time someone pastes one of your store links into Facebook, WhatsApp, X/Twitter, LinkedIn, Discord, Slack, iMessage, Telegram or Reddit, that platform builds a card from your page's Open Graph tags — and the og:image decides the picture. Left to Shopify's defaults that is often a bare product photo, or nothing at all. Social Media Share Image (Yuhu) generates a branded 1200×1200 share image for every product, collection, page and blog article, and gives you a separate control for each part of how it looks. Here are the nine that decide how your links look when they are shared — what each one does, when to reach for it, and the guide that walks you through it. They are independent: use one, or all nine.
1 Switch the share tags on with the theme app embed
The gate everything else depends on. The app serves its og:image through a theme app embed, so until you enable that embed and press Save in the theme editor, your live storefront never carries the app's tags — which is the usual reason a link still shares with no image. Open Theme status in the app, click Enable the app embed and save the theme, and the page updates itself to Your theme is ready to go! once Shopify reports it on. From there the app generates and serves the image on its own and regenerates it when products change. See Shopify social share image not showing? Enable the app embed.
2 Decide how many product photos go into the picture
One clean photo, or several combined? The default transformation chooses your collage layout — Combine (merge) the first N product images side by side — and the Preview transformations wizard in the app's navigation picks one of your products and shows you how 1–4 product photos look combined before you commit. With smart photo selection on, the app picks a product's best photos and skips near-duplicate white-background shots instead of just taking the first few. The setup guide covers the wizard: How to set up a Shopify social share image.
3 Put your logo and brand color on every image
The Brand kit section of Settings turns a product photo into a branded one. Paste a Brand logo URL (a PNG with a transparent background works best) or use Upload logo image…, then set Logo position, Logo size (% of image width) and Logo opacity (%). A Brand color (hex) is used as the background for text-only share images, such as blog posts or pages with no photo of their own, and a Fallback image URL covers pages and articles that have no images at all. Every control has a Live preview beside it. See Design branded social share images.
4 Draw the title, price and a sale badge onto the image
The Text overlays section is where price and discount get onto the image. There, type your message in Overlay text using live tokens — {title}, {price}, {compare_at_price} and {discount} — which are replaced per product when the image is generated, and set its Text position, Text color (hex), Text background color and Text size (px on a 1200px image). A small corner Badge text such as "{discount}% OFF" is hidden automatically when a token has no value, so a full-price product simply shows no badge. The design guide walks through each field.
5 Start from a preset, or schedule a seasonal look
For a designed result without filling in every field, the Style presets row applies a ready-made look in one click and keeps your uploaded logo: Clean minimal, Title & price, On sale, Black Friday, Elegant and New arrival. A preset is only a starting point — every field stays editable afterwards. For a sale you can plan ahead instead: Scheduled campaign look takes a Campaign preset plus a Start date and End date, switches your images to that look for the window and reverts automatically when it ends. Both are in the design guide.
6 Override the image for a single product
Sometimes one product needs different treatment than the rest of the catalog — its first photo is a plain white-background shot, or you have a designed image you would rather share. On the dashboard, open that product's Actions menu and choose Create custom to pick exactly which of its photos fill the four Selected images slots, or use Upload custom image to add your own file. Preview image renders the real result before you press Save image & back to dashboard, and Use default returns the product to the automatic image. Every other product keeps the global design. Follow Set a custom social share image for a single product.
7 Extend coverage to store pages and Pinterest
Products, collections and blog articles get share images out of the box; two switches widen that. Change social share images for pages? in Settings extends coverage to your store pages, using the fallback image and your brand color for content that has no photos. The Pinterest section can Generate Pinterest pin images — an extra tall 1000×1500 image sized the way Pinterest displays pins, alongside the standard square one, plus a Pinterest "Save" button on product and collection pages. Both are described in the design guide and the setup guide.
8 See the card each platform will build, before you share
You do not have to post a link to find out how it looks. The free Social Share Preview Checker (under Tools on our site) fetches one URL, reads its live Open Graph and Twitter-card tags, grades the result, and renders the preview card for Facebook, X/Twitter, WhatsApp, LinkedIn, Discord, Slack, iMessage, Telegram and Reddit in each platform's own style. A Raw tags we found panel lists the exact values the page returned, and issues such as a missing og:image or a too-small image are flagged as banners. It needs no signup and works on any Shopify store URL. See Test your Shopify link preview with the free checker.
9 Fix a blank or stale preview in WhatsApp
When you paste a Shopify link into WhatsApp, the card that appears is built from the page's Open Graph tags, and a blank one usually means the page serves no valid og:image, or the image URL is not reachable when WhatsApp fetches it. The same branded image the app serves fixes that everywhere og:image is read. The other half is caching: platforms cache previews per URL, so a link you shared before the change keeps showing the old card until it is re-fetched — test a link you have not shared yet to see the current state. See WhatsApp link preview on Shopify.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my Shopify link preview show no image?
The most common cause is that the theme app embed is not enabled yet. The app serves its og:image through that embed, so until you turn it on and save your theme, your storefront pages do not carry the app's share-image tags. Open Theme status in the app and click Enable the app embed and save the theme.
Why does the preview still show the old image after I changed it?
Social platforms cache link previews per URL, so a link you already shared keeps showing the cached card until the platform re-fetches the page. Share a fresh link, or re-scrape the URL with the platform's own debugger, to see the current image right away.
Can I change the share image for just one product?
Yes. On the dashboard, open that product's Actions menu and choose Create custom, click the photos you want into the Selected images slots or upload your own file, preview the result and save. Only that product is affected; every other product keeps the global design from Settings.
How many product photos can go into one share image?
Up to four. One photo makes a clean single image; two to four are combined side by side into a collage. Smart photo selection picks a product's best photos and skips near-duplicate white-background shots.
Will changing the design update the images I already have?
Yes. Saving new design settings applies to newly generated images, and changing the layout or look regenerates your images so the catalog matches your current settings. Images also regenerate on their own when a product changes.
Does the app add share buttons to my storefront?
No. It is different from social-share-button apps: it does not add sharing buttons to your store. It generates the preview image itself, the picture that appears when a link to your store is shared.
Do I have to enable the app embed again after switching themes?
Yes. A theme app embed is stored per theme, so a brand-new theme starts with it off. Open Theme status again on the new theme and enable the embed there.
